The work of the classic of French literature Jean Giraudoux (1882–1944) in Russia, unfortunately, is not as popular as it deserves. The author of more than 30 works of different genres, Jean Giraudoux is a brilliant stylist, a keen-eyed, witty observer, a paradoxical thinker. Almost all his life he combined literary activities with diplomatic ones. Giraudoux is better known to us as a playwright. A one-volume volume of his dramatic works was published in Russia, including 6 plays. The novel “The Liar” occupies a special place in the writer’s work. According to his son, Jean-Pierre Giraudoux, it is autobiographical in nature. This is “a frank account of what he experienced,” says Jean-Pierre Giraudoux in the afterword to the novel, which was published only in 1969 (1st edition in French, Grasse publishing house). This book, in fact, opened up a new facet of Giraudoux’s talent - a subtle master of the psychological love story. “The Liar” is a typical sentimental women's novel. The main character, the lovely young Nelly, is trying to sort out her feelings and relationships with two men. One of them is the slightly vulgar bourgeois Gaston, the second is the refined aristocrat Reginald. By the end of the book, a third appears - the noble Fortrange. What will happen to Nelly?
