“Dragon at Sea” tells the story of one voyage of a submarine tug to retrieve oil from an offshore field. The setting is Antarctica, the time is not too distant future. There is a protracted war on the planet between the Western and communist blocs, and a war in which the parties do not hesitate to use nuclear weapons (the destruction of Great Britain is mentioned). The problem with fuel for the “Western” is acute and they are equipping underwater tankers, towed by small tug submarines (the crew is only four people) to extract oil literally “under the noses” of the Russians - on the shelf in the Novaya Zemlya area. Not everything is going smoothly - Of the last twenty tugs, not one returned. The fleet command suspects betrayal and sabotage and decides to send psychologist (and part-time naval engineer) Ramsey on the next voyage. He is faced with the task of not only identifying the traitor, but also finding ways to combat “combat fatigue syndrome” - a specific nervous disorder that affects submarine crews.
