The historical story “Grandfathers” by the Russian writer Vsevolod Vladimirovich Krestovsky (1839–1895), widely known in the second half of the 19th century, describes the reign of Paul I. The main idea of the book is to illuminate the personality of this emperor, to depict his reign not in gloomy colors, to show that the negative aspects of Paul’s activities were exaggerated by both his contemporaries and subsequent historians. The book vividly depicts images of representatives of the noble classes - nobles, officers, landowners. The last chapters are dedicated to Generalissimo Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov, the Italian and Swiss campaigns of Russian troops in 1799 under his command, the crossing of the Alps by Suvorov's miracle heroes.
