Eusebius of Caesarea, Pamphilus, bishop. (c. 265 - c. 340), Greek. writer, the first historian of the Church, whose works have survived to this day. E. is rightly called the “father of church historiography”, since, unlike his predecessors (Egesippus, Julius Africanus, etc.), he tried to give his work the character of completeness and systematicity.
Ecclesiastical History is of great value. . due to the fact that in it he cited excerpts from many lost texts. Only from op. E. we know about the books of Papias of Hierapolis, Egesippus and other early Christian writers that shed light on the origin of the Gospels. He also reports on many traditions concerning the apostolic time and communities of the 1st-2nd centuries. (about St. John, Thaddeus, James, etc.).
