Rudolf Sloboda, a famous Slovak prose writer of the middle generation, tends to analyze complex, sometimes contradictory states of the human spirit, the inner life of heroes, the extent of their responsibility for their actions to themselves, their conscience and the world around them. In this sense, his writing style is somewhat akin to the artistic style of Marcel Proust. The hero of his novel - a screenwriter at one of the Bratislava studios - is going through a difficult period: the recent death of his father, who was close to him in spirit, complicated relationships with his wife, with colleagues, a creative crisis, painful thinking about the meaning of life and the social significance of one’s work.
