Poems have a special place in Lermontov’s literary heritage. Over twelve years of his creative life, he wrote in whole or in part (if you count unfinished plans) about thirty poems, an intensity that seems unprecedented in the history of Russian literature. He managed to continue and approve Pushkin’s artistic discoveries and largely predetermined the future fate of this genre in Russian poetry. Lermontov's poems were the highest point in the development of Russian romantic poems of the post-Pushkin period.
