Vadim Erazmovich Vatsuro (1935–2000) studied the work and life of Lermontov for more than four decades. This edition includes almost everything written by V. E. Vatsuro about Lermontov - from fourth-year student work to research in the 1990s, from dictionary entries in the Lermontov Encyclopedia and sketches devoted to individual poems, to works summarizing the general achievements of Lermontov studies, and many years of intense study by an outstanding philologist. V. E. Vatsuro also focused on issues of textual criticism, biography, the posthumous fate of Lermontov’s creative heritage, and the history of Lermontov studies. Lermontov’s works were studied by V. E. Vatsuro in a rich historical and literary context, therefore the set of articles offered to the reader can rightfully be considered a book not only about Lermontov, but also about his era. A number of materials from the researcher’s personal archive are being published for the first time.
