A story by Konstantin Konstantinovich Vaginov (1899-1934), first published in 1922. “Only the coast is rocky, and the wind is stubborn, and the sea is loud. The north wind whipped my cheeks, and my foot sank into the through ice. And I saw spotted people carved from granite. They moved slowly and dragged behind them a statue as beautiful as a fiery night, broke its arms and led it further into the darkness. I couldn’t resist, I tore it out and ran with it to the unpainted boat, and we sailed into the stormy sea. But the sea calmed down. I saw that we were sailing to a new land. The patterned one came ashore and found a magnificent temple, but not a soul was there. Birds flew, carrying grapes. The sun hung in the sky undimmed. Sweet air surrounded my body."
