The book “Woman and the Salvation of the World” by the Russian Christian writer and theologian Pavel Evdokimov, who lived in France, is well known in the West, where it was first published in 1958 in French. Russian theology, unfortunately, has addressed the topic of women quite rarely, both in the past and in the present. The author tries to comprehend the purpose, role and place of women in the historical ontological and eschatological context. He writes with confident strokes, skillfully using the patristic heritage and the works of modern Orthodox and Catholic theologians. Undoubted erudition and good knowledge of sources can give the impression that his book reveals church teaching. Of course this is not true. In his remarkable work “On the Question of the Filioque” (St. Petersburg, 1913), our outstanding church historian Vasily Bolotov (April 5, 1900) gives clear criteria for distinguishing theologumen and private theological opinion and distinguishes them from dogma. “The content of dogma is true “,” he says, “the content of the theologumena is only probable, these are the theological opinions of the holy fathers of the one undivided Church. I distinguish quite sharply theological opinions from theologumena. These are only the private opinions of those... who are nothing more than theologians... Each Russian theologian is essentially a representative only of his personal opinion... and if I choose my private opinions... from the circle of theological opinions, I am responsible for them as for your own guesses." It is with such private opinions and guesses that we are dealing with Evdokimov. And if this is so, then one can disagree with his ideas and argue with him.
