St. Cyril of Alexandria (375 - 444) is the great holy father of the Orthodox Church, who became famous primarily for his dogmatic achievements in the field of Christology and his refutation of the heresy of Nestorius in 429-431. However, the scope of his activity was much wider, and he is also known as a profound exegete of the Holy Scriptures. Among the New Testament exegetical works, the most famous is the Commentary on the Gospel of John, which is offered to the reader. This work was supposedly written before 429 and contains 12 books in which, in addition to the interpretation of this “secret” Evangelist and the explanation of the deep mysteries of the Divine Economy of salvation and the Incarnation, the saint polemicizes against various heresies. This interpretation is a masterpiece ancient church patristic exegesis, was translated into Russian by the famous Russian church biblical scholar, professor of the Moscow Theological Academy Mitrofan Dmitrievich Muretov (1851 - 1917).
