Pawel Hülle (b. 1957) is one of the best writers in modern Poland, winner of many literary awards. Born in Gdansk, he graduated from the university there with a degree in Polish philology, taught, and worked as a journalist. He held the post of secretary of the press bureau of the independent trade union "Solidarity", director of the Gdansk television center, and currently writes a regular column in the "Gazeta Wyborcza". He writes little (in twenty years - three novels and three collections of stories), but each of his books became a real literary event. The most significant in his work is considered the debut novel “Weiser Davidek”, which received a lot of rave reviews, translated into many languages (the book into English translated by Michael Kandel, St. Lem's regular translator) and filmed by Wojciech Marczewski in 2001. This magical-realistic story, like most of his works, is built around the theme of search, with detective elements, but the solution, for all its apparent proximity, hauntingly looms beyond reach, illustrating the thesis about the fundamental unknowability of the world, and the most everyday events play the role of profound characters. Stylistically and thematically based on the work of Günther Grass, Hülle builds a narrative around the figure of the teenager Weiser Davidek, who has almost magical powers and mysteriously disappears in the summer of 1957 near Gdansk. Moreover, the narrator is one of the witnesses to this disappearance, trying to comprehend what he saw with his own eyes, and conducting his investigation for more than twenty years...
