The second volume of the Collected Works of St. Tikhon of Zadonsk includes the work “Spiritual Treasure.” “Spiritual Treasure” was written by St. Tikhon in the Zadonsk Monastery; The saint worked on this work for almost 3 years, namely from 1777 to November 19, 1779. This work was published for the first time in 1784 in St. Petersburg, and then it was published many times, both in its entirety and and in parts. In all these publications, the “Spiritual Treasure” was divided into 4 parts, with a separate count of articles, specific for each part. In the 2003 edition we see a division into two parts (Articles 1–102 and 103–157). We do not see such a division in the original: the entire book, according to the original manuscript, consists of 157 separate articles, connected by a numbering that runs continuously throughout the entire work. The same distribution of the creation in question is adopted in this edition. “Spiritual Treasure” is printed in this edition from original manuscripts stored in Usm. Soph. m-re (No., according to typical account, 5–8). The original was written by the hand of St. Tikhon, Ivan Efimov, and, like other originals, not written by the saint’s own hand and intended by him for presentation to the Holy Synod, was carefully revised by the author himself: in the margins and in the text (especially from No. 57 to 107) there are corrections and inscriptions , in places half a page, in the saint’s own hand; even obvious scribe errors were corrected; at the end of each volume he, the saint, has his own signature: “Tikhon N (unworthy) Bishop,” and a note: under volume 2, “December 1778, 12 days”; under the 3rd: “March 29, 1779” and under the 4th: “November 1779, 19 days.” The original manuscript is divided into 4 bindings, of which in the 1st, according to the modern edition, 251 sheets, in the 2nd 195 sheets, in the 3rd 212 sheets and in the 4th 161 sheets, all in 4.
