This book, consisting of two parts, is two books, or rather, two versions of the same book. In the first version, it was written in the fall of 1996 and then published in Basel. After re-reading it for some time, I thought that I could write it again: not redo it, supplement it, change it, but write it again. So it was published in a new version in the spring of 1998 by the same Basel publishing house Rudolf Geering. Only the subtitle was changed, which determined the entire difference between the lines of sight and sighting ranges of both versions. The wake for Europe, seen first in the optics of “one approaching catastrophe,” was copied a second time in the “memory of one missed recovery.” I repeat: it was not about an addition, but about a new attempt; If I had lost the manuscript and if I had a desire to restore what was lost, I would, of course, restore it not from memory and not from fragments, like some figurine that fell from its stand and broke, but from scratch and “again for the first time.”
