Gerald Durrell (1925–1995) is a famous English zoologist and traveler, one of the cult figures of the twentieth century. Darrell's books have long been a part of the golden fund of world literature and are very popular among readers around the world. In the 50s of the last century, Darrell equipped one expedition after another to different parts of the world. The Hounds of Bafut is the story of the famed trapper's second journey to West Africa. The main difficulty of this trip, oddly enough, was not the search for wild animals in places untouched by civilization, but close communication with the eccentric ruler of Cameroon - Fon Bafuta, a lover of daily amusements, who saw a companion in Darrell. And yet, the most difficult and saddest part of each such journey, according to the zoologist, was its completion. After all, after several months spent side by side with the captured animals, they had to part with them. Realizing this, Darrell realized that the only way to solve the problem was to open his own zoo. The author talks about how one of the most famous nurseries to date was created in the story “A Zoo in My Luggage”. The publication contains illustrations by the famous British artist Ralph Thompson.
