Sixty Kilos of Sunshine is a historical novel about how new times came to cold and poor Iceland at the turn of the 20th century. Residents of a remote fjord in the north of the country have eked out a miserable existence for centuries in the struggle for survival: they fought blizzards and avalanches, herded sheep and cows, went out to fish for cod and sharks, and repaired the leaking roofs of their dugouts. It seemed impossible to get out of this rut in life. But one day a school of herring entered the fjord, followed by Norwegian fishermen, and everything in the outback began to move! This is not only a great novel about the history of the people, written picturesquely and with a sense of humor, but also a touching story about the fate of a boy who is looking for a way to survive in this harsh world. Hallgrim Helgason (b. 1959) is one of the most famous Icelandic writers, winner of many national and international literary awards, Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Beaux-Letters of France (2021). The author’s poems and novels “101 Reykjavik”, “Ten Housekeeping Tips for a Hitman”, “A Woman at 1000°C” were published in Russian. Sixty Kilograms of Sunlight was awarded the Icelandic Literary Prize (2019), as well as awards for Best Translated Book of the Year in Germany (2020) and Best Audiobook in Iceland (2021).
