This edition brings to the attention of readers five articles about cocaine and cocaineism by the great Austrian psychologist and psychiatrist, the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud. The young scientist spent a lot of time studying the medicinal properties of coca. At first, Freud considered cocaine an antidepressant in both somatic and psychological terms. Freud experienced both influences himself, as he subsequently explored the unconscious through introspection. Later, the scientist would declare cocaine a dangerous drug and abandon further research in this area, not without difficulty getting rid of cocaine addiction. The articles included in this collection are published quite rarely, since they do not have pharmacological value, although it was under the influence of Freud’s experiments that cocaine began to be used in eye surgery. Their main significance lies in the fact that they indicate the awakening of young Freud’s interest in the unconscious, which later became the main topic of the scientist’s research.
