The book by Polish writer and journalist Hanna Krall (b. 1935) was written based on conversations with Marek Edelman, one of those who led the resistance to the fascists in the Warsaw ghetto, and the only survivor after its defeat; Edelman subsequently became a cardiologist. The publication of the book “Ahead of the Lord God” created a sensation. In simple, clear words, deliberately without embellishing anything and avoiding pathos, Edelman talks about the destruction of the Warsaw ghetto and the people with whom fate confronted him then. He talks about truly terrible things that make your blood run cold. But, as Evgeny Yevtushenko writes in the afterword to the book, “only knowledge of heartlessness leads to knowledge of human hearts.”
