The proposed work “Culture of the Syrians in the Middle Ages” is the result of N.V. Pigulevskaya’s many years of work in Syriac science. Syrian sources were the main area of interest and the starting point of all scientific works of Nina Viktorovna. The enormous contribution she made to the study of the history of Byzantium, Iran, Arabia, the history of the peoples of the USSR, was based on the widespread and consistent use of a new layer of sources - literature in the Syriac language, including works of the most diverse nature: historical and hagiographical chronicles, legal and geographical treatises, even to alchemical literature and acts of church councils. /.../ ... the book is a complete whole: it gives a picture of the culture of the Syrians in the Middle Ages and its relationships with the cultures of neighboring peoples: the Byzantines, Persians, Arabs. The reader will find in the book extensive materials about the relations of the Syrians with the peoples of distant countries - Europe, Central Asia, India, China. Thus, the book provides insight into all aspects of Syrian culture and its role in human history. The work also enriches our understanding of medieval culture in general, showing the Middle Ages period not as the “dark ages” in the history of mankind, not as a period of decline and regression, but as a natural, unique stage in the historical and cultural development of human society.
