Prose writer, playwright and essayist Drago Jančar is the central figure of modern Slovenian literature, the most translated Slovenian author. His books have been published in more than twenty languages. Russian readers are familiar with his novels “Galernik” (1982) and “Northern Lights” (1990). The action of the novel “Katarina, the Peacock and the Jesuit” (2000) takes place during the Seven Years' War (1756–1763), into which most European countries were drawn . The main character of the novel, Katarina, tired of the meaninglessness and futility of her life, from a ten-year unrequited infatuation with the brilliant Austrian officer Windisch, who was nicknamed “peacock,” goes with Slovenian pilgrims to Cologne to the Golden Reliquary with the relics of the Holy Magi. At this point, she is destined to meet the former Jesuit Simon, who became her true great love. The breadth of coverage of events described by the hand of a talented, mature master, the historical and psychological authenticity of the story, the wealth of living details of the past, the presentation of eternal and at the same time unusually topical problems distinguish this best novel by the writer.
