Before you, reader, is a translation of the poem that sheds light on the true purpose of Man. Its author is the great Indian sage, philosopher, yogi Aurobindo Ghosh, who later became known as Sri Aurobindo. The poem is based on a legend told in the Mahabharata, the great Indian epic. The narrative begins with the story of Yoga Ashwapati, Savitri’s father, and then moves on to the path that Savitri took, descending into the other world of the god Yama to rescue her beloved Satyavan. The poem consists of 49 songs in 12 books, totaling 724 pages. This publication contains a translation from pages 1 to 302 of the original - a translation of the first two books preceding the journey of Savitri.
