Writer Thomas De Quincey, the famous Opium Lover, travels to the Lake District with his daughter Emily to save his library, which is up for auction. On the train, they witness a murder - the first in the history of railway transport - and return to London to help their friends, police officers Ryan and Becker. However, British Prime Minister Lord Palmerston, for unknown reasons, is preventing the investigation of this and other crimes that paralyzed the entire transport system of the country and caused panic on the stock exchange.
