The thief Widdershins and her “personal god” Olgun return to their hometown of Davillon after almost a year of absence. Shins expects difficulties with offended friends, but discovers something much worse. Her enemy, Lisette, has returned, and not alone. Lisette made a dark deal with supernatural forces that granted her abilities that Widdershins and Olgun could not match. Together, Widdershins and Olgun will face enemies on both sides of the law, as Lisette influenced both the Davillon government and the underworld. To have even the slightest chance of winning, Shins needs the help of old friends—some who haven't even forgiven her yet—and new allies.
