Six months ago, Widdershins and her “personal deity” Olgun fled from Davillon. Along the way, Widdershins unwittingly learns that the house of aristocrats has decided to move against the last surviving bastion of the Delacroix family. Deciding to help distant relatives of her adoptive father, the late Alexandre Delacroix, she goes to a town on the outskirts. There she begins to unravel a conspiracy involving both that house of aristocrats and a local criminal gang, and at the same time those whom she is trying to save are in no hurry to trust her. She will also have to deal with a traitor in the Delacroix family, a mad alchemist and a young aristocrat in love who does not want to hear a refusal.
