Georgy Florovsky (1893-1979) is one of the most prominent Orthodox theologians and historians of the twentieth century, the inspirer of the “return to the Holy Fathers of the Church” in modern theology. The neopatristic direction of Florovsky and his followers is often contrasted with the theological “modernism” of Sergius Bulgakov and sophiology. In the present study, Pavel Gavrilyuk analyzes the intellectual evolution of Florovsky, from his youthful fascination with Vladimir Solovyov and correspondence with Pavel Florensky in Odessa, to his subsequent involvement in the Eurasian movement in the early twenties in Sofia and Prague, as well as teaching at the St. Sergius Institute in Paris and communication with Bulgakov, Nikolai Berdyaev, and other representatives of the religious and philosophical renaissance. Based on extensive archival research and previously unpublished materials, the book offers a new interpretation of the paths of Orthodox theology of the first half of the twentieth century, and is also the first monographic reflection on the origins, methods, and content of Florovsky's neopatristic theology. Recommended to anyone interested in Orthodox theology, both modern and patristic. This edition is an authorized, corrected and expanded translation of the book Georges Florovsky and the Russian Religious Renaissance, published in Oxford in 2014. Source: 5687526
