The name of Karl Kautsky (1854–1938) is familiar to the reader. Having joined the labor movement in the 70s of the 19th century, Kautsky initially shared views that were far from Marxism. Then he met Marx and Engels and became a supporter of their teaching, although very inconsistent. Marx and Engels sharply criticized Kautsky's mistakes and his penchant for philistinism. "The economic teachings of Karl Marx" are perhaps the most famous of all that came from Kautsky's pen. Written in 1886, this book was, according to Kautsky, reviewed by Engels in manuscript. The peculiarity of this work by Kautsky is that the author gives here a popular exposition of Marx’s Capital (mainly within the first volume), closely adhering to the original. He quotes Marx extensively. But even where Kautsky conveys the content of “Capital” without resorting to quotations, he tries to reproduce Marx’s train of thought, using his argumentation and even artistic images that enliven the text.
