Henry Suso (1295/1297-1366) - pupil, follower, apologist, but partly also a critic of his teacher Meister Eckhart (whose works have already been published in the "Literary Monuments" series), a stern ascetic, a fiery ecstatic, a preacher and confessor of women's monasteries, who became widely known among domestic readers as one of the main characters in the famous book by I. Huizinga “Autumn of the Middle Ages”, is, along with his Cologne mentor Eckhart and friend John Tauler (whose works are still awaiting their academic presentation to the Russian audience), one of the three great mystics of late medieval Germany and the founders of its philosophy. Eckhart's Neoplatonic theology, as edited by G. Suso, came close to the theology of the Byzantine Palamites of the 14th century. and compiled it Western European analogue. That is why the work of the Konstanz charismatic will undoubtedly be in demand in domestic religious thought, brought up on the works of V. Lossky and others. I. Meyendorff, and his searches in the context of the search for modern forms of spiritual life, not involved in church officialdom and alternative to it, will be perceived as fresh and relevant. The works of G. Suso cannot leave one indifferent in another respect. First of all, this is the autobiography of our hero - “Vita”, the first in German literature, which is a true encyclopedia of the life of medieval Germany: bloody, frankly savage asceticism, radical methods of “imitation of Christ” (mortification, self-flagellation) and ecstatic contemplation; common customs, festivals, plague epidemics, worship relics and belief in miracles, taking the form of mass excitement; the objective culture of that time and scenes of everyday life of social classes - this whole picture, full of passions and intellectual struggles, is revealed to the Russian reader in all its diversity and inconsistency. Here is the history of monastic life, and the exciting catechetical travels of the Servant - the literary image of G. Suso - who falls into the hands of robbers or into the thick of an angry crowd, ready for reprisal, drowning in the stormy waters of the Rhine, slandered by his closest spiritual children and pursued by feudal lords who have sworn to betray him deadly reprisal. The publication includes all the German-language works of G. Suso - both included and not included in the author’s collection prepared by him - “Exemplar”. To the first The group includes the autobiography “Vita”, “The Book of Eternal Wisdom”, written in the tradition of spiritual dialogue, the “Little Book of Truth” - the sum and apology of Eckhart’s theology, and the “Book of Letters” - a kind of epistolary compendium. The second group consists of the “Big Book of Letters” addressed to various persons and subsequently collected by G. Suso’s spiritual daughter, Dominican E. Stagel, four sermons, the authorship of two of which is considered not to be definitively established, as well as the meditative treatise of Pseudo-Suso “The Little Book of Love”. The only Latin work of the Constance mystic, the Book of Hours of Wisdom, is represented by a number of parallel passages (more than 120 in total) to the Book of Eternal Wisdom, a brief edition of this book of hours included in the Exemplar. The translation is accompanied by detailed notes and two articles devoted to both the work of G. Suso in general and his “Book of Hours of Wisdom” in particular.
