This is a historical novel by the Austrian writer of Jewish origin Franz Werfel, based on real events and published in 34 languages. The 53-day defense of the Armenians on Mount Musa Dag during the 1915 genocide inspired the author to create his famous novel. The writer, amazed by the events, later stated in an interview: “The defense of Musa Dagh impressed me so much that I wanted to help the Armenians by writing my novel and telling the whole world about these events.” The writer had the idea of writing a book in 1929, when he was in Damascus, where he saw Armenian children whose labor was used in a carpet factory. The incomprehensible fate of the Armenian nation forced Werfel to take up his pen. The novel was written in 1932, in German, based on a careful study of real events by the author, who was then in Syria. Upon its release in 1933, the book was very popular and was translated into 34 languages. When the book was published in the United States in 1934, 34,000 copies were sold in its first two weeks. That same year, the new book was reviewed in the New York Times, saying: “A story that should stir the emotions of all people, Werfel has made it a noble novel. Unlike most other novels, Musa Dagh is based on real events, which describes the story of men accepting the fate of the heroes. The book gives us the opportunity to take part in a historical event. Fabulous." Time magazine named the novel “book of the month” in December 1934. Werfel's book made him one of the favorite writers of Armenians.
