Change is not easy. It's hard to let go of old habits and replace them with new ones. It is difficult to change if the social environment remains the same and does not support you. It's hard to change when you don't really believe you can do it. Here we come to the central question of the book: how do we bring about change? How can I begin to behave in a new way and thereby ensure the success of this endeavor?
To illustrate this process, I came up with a simple and convenient concept of "Ladder". So, imagine a lean-to ladder with three steps.
1. The top step is the goal you are pursuing.
2. The middle step is the behavior that will get you closer to your goal.
3. The bottom step is the support that will help you behave the way you have planned, those techniques that will allow you to initiate and support behavior change.
