The Sahara Novels collection is the most famous book by the Taiwanese writer San-mao (1943-1991).
Moved by a childhood dream and a thirst for adventure, in the early 1970s, she went to the Spanish Sahara with her lover Jose. During their stay there, and this is only a year and a half, the couple managed to get married, travel the desert up and down, turn the Saharan shack into a local landmark, make friends among the locals, experience all the hardships of life in the desert and learn Sahravi traditions.

In these stories, we will find good-natured humor, and ruthless satire, and sad irony, and endless sympathy for the locals cut off from civilization. At times deliberately unemotional, at times overly emotional, The Sahara Novels circulate in huge numbers in Taiwan and China, and San Mao remains an idol for millions of readers around the world to this day.
