June 4, 1990: FBI Agents Smith and Adams, accompanied by Kentucky State Police Sergeant Fred Davidson and a search dog, arrived in the remote area of Harmons Branch, 10 miles from Pikeville, Kentucky. They had specific directions on where to look for the body of 27-year-old Susan Daniels Smith, but the ravine on the side of the road was so overgrown that the search was futile. As they began their grim work and descended a steep slope, they almost disappeared into the dense thicket of brambles and trees. Then, shortly before dark, one of the searchers noticed what looked like a human skull. After further searching, the team discovered the remains of the dead girl - a skeleton with an intact ribcage, partially hidden by leaves. The arm and leg bones had been dislodged, most likely by wild animals. The jawbone lay next to the skull, missing two molars. Next to the skeleton they found a tiny gold chain and a cross - jewelry that Susan's sister had lent to her on the day she left to meet her lover, FBI Special Agent Mark Stephen Putnam, almost a year ago.< /p>
