Alexei Alekseevich Ukhtomsky, a world-renowned scientist, corresponded with Varvara Aleksandrovna Platonova for more than three decades (1906–1942), but in his letters to her he rarely touched on physiological science and the university environment. Their correspondence, comparable to the pages of an epistolary novel, captured - in dark, tragic times - the chronicle of their love: from a bright impulse in youth to love in its highest, Christian understanding, when spiritual kinship turns out to be much more valuable than worldly happiness.
