Kharkov in 1930, as befits a young republican capital, is full of passions, guests and contradictions. Brilliant plays are read in the cold depths of theater dormitories, famous poets in communal kitchens fight with mice trying to gnaw on manuscripts, but the City does not notice everyday inconveniences. In the Ukrainian drama, the “Berezilians” dance brilliantly, and the State Opera gives a grand premiere of the country’s first “real Soviet ballet.” Unfortunately, the premiere is overshadowed by a murder. It is up to people who are completely unsuited to crime investigation to understand what is happening: an impressive theater critic, a ballerina detached from reality, a student expelled from the workers' faculty and a meticulous young library employee by chance turn into an investigative team. Even the smallest mistake can cost any of them their lives, and there is almost no chance of finding out the truth...
