Notes at Leisure by Yoshida Kaneyoshi (1283–1350) is a remarkable work of Japanese literature. The author knew court life, monastic life, and heard the voices of the street. He saw the fragility of this world and admired it. He was observant and ironic, writing poetry, saying prayers and drinking with friends. He tried to stop the passage of time, thicken its fluidity, and retain its fleeting trace. Yoshida Kaneyoshi was one of those outstanding people who laid the foundations of Japanese aesthetics.
