For the first time, two books by the famous American sociologist and psychoanalyst Erich Fromm are being published in Russian. The first of them - “Revolution of Hope” - is dedicated to the problems of modern industrial society, which drags a person into an endless race of material production and maximum consumption and deprives him of spiritual guidelines. How to remain a person capable of emotions and responsiveness in these conditions? How to avoid becoming a cog in a giant production machine controlled by computers and a unit of the electorate manipulated by corrupt politicians? The reflections of the outstanding humanist and philosopher are addressed primarily to the younger generation. The second book, “Getting Rid of Illusions,” is devoted to a comparative analysis of Marxism and Freudianism—two ideological movements that changed minds at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and then shook the world for a whole century with various political and sexual revolutions.
