The collection of fiction and memoirs continues the previously published books “War. Blockade. Victory!" and “We walked to Victory through all obstacles!” The collection's authors focus on children's destinies during the Great Patriotic War. The life material was selected strictly documentary. Children, of whom there were many at the front, in partisan detachments and underground organizations, performed remarkable feats, and we are not talking about boys and girls, but about middle school students. As for participation in the labor front, here is the score goes for millions. The children were quickly taught the basics of the profession, and they worked equally with adults, but never complained. Many girls worked in field hospitals for 10–15 years. “There are no children in war,” says a well-known saying. The boys grew up not because they wanted to, but because life demanded it. Fathers, brothers, husbands and sons went to the front, and instead boys and girls became helpers. Millions of Soviet children born before the war went through incredible life trials. Bitter orphanhood, destroyed houses, enemy camps, deportation into fascist slavery, a powerless, hungry existence in the occupied territories - this was their lot. They rightfully say about themselves: “We do not come from childhood - from WAR.”...Children of war have different destinies, but they are all united by a common tragedy, the irreparable loss of the world of childhood. The war became their common biography.
