The monograph of the outstanding French medievalist historian J. Le Goff is dedicated to the life and personality of the French king Louis IX the Saint (1214–1270). Turning to the genre of historical biography, the author used in his research the scientific methodology developed by the Annales School, which allowed him to fit the image of the king into the broad panorama of life in medieval France. The book is intended both for medieval historians and for a wide range of readers interested in the Western European Middle Ages.
