Автор майстерно зобразив картину Франції після смерті Пилипа Красивого, показуючи, як слабкість нового монарха Людовіка X призводить до хаосу та безладдя. Читач відчуває всю тяжкість часу, коли країна страждає від голоду та бунтів, а також відчуває напругу, пов'язану з прокляттям тамплієрів.
