Anna realized that she had made a fatal mistake by entering the secret door. But before turning back, she took a few more steps, and then the corridor suddenly ended, leading her into a spacious room with a high ceiling. With eyes full of horror, she stared at the monstrous picture that appeared before her eyes. Anna wanted to scream, but the scream was stuck in her throat. Skeletons in rags lay on the bare stone floor. The bony hand of one of them was reaching for a clay jug. Probably, there was once water in the jug, but it stood at a distance inaccessible to the unfortunate prisoner. Suddenly, a chilling laugh was heard from somewhere. Anna, still unable to make a sound, looked around. On the opposite side of the hall, someone was standing in the doorway. The face and even the figure could not be seen; they were hidden by the bright scarlet cloak in which the stranger was wearing. A wild, desperate cry finally escaped from the young woman's chest.
