The idea of a short story dedicated to Beethoven arose from Odoevsky, apparently immediately after receiving the news of the composer’s death. The story is based on fiction no less than on historical legends and facts: in it, next to the real Beethoven, the non-existent Louise acts and etc. In its genre, the story is a kind of romantic short story, which tends to mix the fantastic and the real, the mysterious and the uncertain. From the story we don’t even know which of Beethoven’s last quartets we are talking about. The poetics of Odoevsky’s romantic short story does not require obligatory specificity and fidelity in detail.
