The Blue Chronicle is the most famous work on the history of Buddhism in Tibet. The author Goi-lotsawa Shonnupal (1392-1481) is an outstanding Tibetan historian, a contemporary of the reformer Tsonghawa, a witness to the heyday of Buddhism during the era of rapid construction of monasteries and the emergence of the Gelug school. The “Chronicle” briefly describes the history of Buddhism in India and in detail the history of Buddhism in Tibet, covering the entire period of the formation of Tibetan Buddhism: from the reign of King Songtsen-gampo (8th century) to 1478 - the year this book was written. “Chronicle” in detail describes the development of the old school of Tibetan Buddhism - Nyingma and new schools - Kadam, Kagyu, Karma, Zhonan, Sakya and the beginning of Gelug; contains lists of teachers along the lines of succession of various teachings. The Chronicle contains short and lengthy biographies of outstanding Tibetan Buddhist scholars, contemplatives, religious organizers, and translators; describes the history of the spread of the most important Buddhist systems: from the Guhyagarbha Tantra to the Kalachakra Tantra.
