The Bourbons are an old French family, which, thanks to its relationship with the royal house of the Capetians, occupied the French and other thrones for a long time. Its name comes from the castle of Bourbon l'Archambeau in the former province of Bourbonnais. The first known representative of this dynasty was Aimar (Adhemar), mentioned in chronicles already in 915 and who founded the priory of Souvigny in Bourbonnais in 921. The foundations for the prosperity of the family were laid by the marriage of Beatrice of Burgundy with the sixth son of Louis IX, Robbert, concluded in 1272.
