The Stuarts (originally Gaelic. Stiubhairt, English. Steward, Stewart, from the 16th century the French spelling of the English Stuart was established) - a dynasty of kings of Scotland (1371-1651, 1660-1707), England (1603-1649, 1660-1694, 1702-1707), Ireland (1603-1649, 1660-1694, 1702-1714) and Great Britain (1707-1714). The first known representative of the Stuart family was the hereditary seneschal Alan Fitz- Flaad at the court of the ruler of Share. He arrived in Britain shortly after the Norman Conquest in the 11th century. In this connection, the opinions of researchers regarding his origin differ - he could be either a Breton or a Norman. Alan was a supporter of the English king of the House of Normandy, Henry I, who granted him land holdings in Shropshire. One of his sons, Walter Fitz-Alan (died 1177), during the period of feudal anarchy in England, supported Empress Matilda and became close to the Scottish king David I. Around 1136, Walter moved to Scotland, where he received extensive possessions in Renfrewshire, a life peerage and hereditary the position of High Steward (ruler) of the Scottish royal court. The Stuart family name came from the name of the position. The Stuart era was full of dramatic events. During the reign, there were riots and explosions of public discontent when brother went against brother. Despite this, after the Stuarts lost the crown, this dynasty found many supporters who fought for its return to the throne. Great dynasties of the world Biographies of world rulers.
