The review, while hardly an exhaustive description of the poetry of M. P. Rozenheim, is far from being reduced to an assessment of the work of this minor poet. The crisis of the autocratic-serf system caused a wave of discontent that gripped the entire society, including conservative circles. The representative of such conservative “criticism” in Dobrolyubov’s review is M.P. Rozenheim, although the differences between conservative and liberal denunciation were not significant for the democratic critic: Rozenheim is perceived by him on a par with the liberals. Dobrolyubov shows that the repetition of platitudes about respect for the law, the vileness of bribery, etc., pettiness and abstractness of denunciation are not a manifestation of political naivety in Rosenheim, but a desire to avoid serious formulation of public problems.
