If there were art critics in the 20th century worthy of the epithet “great,” then the Englishman John Burger (1926–2017) certainly belongs to their number. Each of his many books became an event, his interpretations have long been considered classics, and the BBC film “The Art of Seeing” was included in the programs of all Western universities. He wrote superbly in all genres, non-fiction and fiction, and - alone among all art critics - won the Booker Prize for Literature for his novel J. (1972). An exponent of left-wing views, a Marxist, Burger was, first of all, a caring person and a keen observer who was able to notice in works of art created in the distant past features that were relevant for our time, and in modern works - signs of eternity. This collection contains Burger's articles on artists written over a period of sixty years. They cover the entire history of art - from rock paintings in Paleolithic caves to the works of living authors.
