The book by Luc Boltanski and Laurent Thévenot is the most significant work of French sociology of the last thirty years (the period that followed the appearance of the main works of Pierre Bourdieu). It proposed a theory of society that formed the basis of the so-called “pragmatic turn” or “return of the subject” in French social sciences in the 1990s. This book is also directed against the “school of suspicion” - the generally accepted habit after Marx, Freud and Nietzsche of seeing in the rational arguments of subjects of social life nothing more than a reflection of the hidden springs of their behavior. Therefore, the main attention in the book is paid not to social structures or ideologies, but to the analysis of specific situations of disputes and conflicts in everyday life and, above all, the arguments that their participants put forward to justify the justice of their claims.
