A huge number of books, articles, studies, dissertations have been written about Vasily Vasilyevich Rozanov (1856–1919), but at the same time he remains the most mysterious, most controversial character of the Silver Age. Conservative, decadent, patriot, Christ-fighter, statist, anarchist, cleric, erotomaniac, monarchist, Judeophobe, in love with everything Jewish, uninhibited journalist, philosopher of gender, a free captive of his own impressions, he lived an unusually difficult, passionate and vibrant life. Having become one of the most famous Russian writers of his time, he treated literary fame with contempt, and at the end of his life he witnessed the collapse of both Russian statehood and his own family. Rozanov’s story is a story of brilliant victories and defeats, happiness and misfortune, what Blok called the immutable law of the heart: “joy is one suffering.” And for all these feelings, all the sensations, all the events and moments of life, V.V. knew how to choose the most accurate and magical, the most “Rozanov-esque” words, which have not lost their charm a century later. The author of the book, writer Alexey Varlamov, does not shy away from pressing and difficult questions of the biography of his hero and invites the reader to look for answers to them with him.
