Epicure is an ancient Greek philosopher and founder of his own teaching, which was called Epicureanism. At the age of 32 he created his own school. In Athens, the Epicureans gathered in a garden that belonged to him. This is where the second name of the school came from - “The Garden of Epicurus”, and its inhabitants were called philosophers “from the gardens”. Epicurus preached spiritual serenity and freedom from the fear of death. The satisfaction of life's needs was considered the basis of happiness. Therefore, those entering the school were greeted by the saying: “Guest, you will feel good here. Here pleasure is the highest good.” Of the nearly three hundred works which Epicurus is supposed to have written, only fragments survive. The texts known to us today are reduced to three important letters to friends, to eighty aphorisms called “Main Ideas,” and to several dozen passages extracted from his works. All texts are provided with detailed comments and explanations.
