The work of the writer and historian Daniil Lukich Mordovtsev (1830–1905) is extensive and varied. His numerous historical works, both fiction and documentary, have always been perceived with great interest by the modern reader, have been reprinted several times and translated into many languages. This volume presents Mordovtsev’s novel “The Tsar and the Hetman.” In it, the author reveals the complex relationship between Peter I and Hetman Mazepa, and also sheds new light on the events of the Battle of Poltava, which affected the fate of the Russian, Belarusian, Ukrainian and Polish peoples.
