Milorad Pavic. Khazar DictionarySerbian writer Milorad Pavic (b. 1929) is the author of numerous collections of poetry and short stories, as well as works of literary criticism. Pavic gained worldwide fame from his “lexicon novel” “The Khazar Dictionary” - one of the most unusual works of world literature of our time.
Milorad Pavic was born on October 15, 1929 in Belgrade. Serbian poet and prose writer, historian of Serbian literature of the 17th–19th centuries, expert on Serbian Baroque and Symbolist poetry, translator of Pushkin and Byron, professor (lectures at the New Sorbonne, Vienna, Novi Sad, Regensburg, Belgrade), full member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (elected 1991). Not belonging to any political party, Pavich is a member of the European Cultural Society and the International Council of the journal Foreign Literature. French and Spanish critics call him “the author of the first book of the 21st century” (“Paris Match”, 1988), and Austrian critics call him “the chief of staff (headquarters) of European modernity.” The Washington Times calls him “a storyteller equal to Homer,” and in South America he is celebrated as “the most important writer of our time” (Milestone, Sao Paulo). Pavich is the most cited living writer in electronic (hypertext) works in the United States (1992 and 1993). “Pavic is one of the greatest personalities of world literature” (Tempo, Madrid, 1994). “There are books that cause a kind of chemical reaction in the reader, and the Khazar Dictionary contains this “poison” ...” (“Mannichi Shimbun”, Japan, 1993). Literary critics and associations of writers in Europe, the USA and Brazil nominated Pavich for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
