Його шлях від юнака-утікача до центуріона наповнений напруженими моментами, які тримають у напрузі. Особливо вражає, як автор зображує стосунки між римськими офіцерами та варварами, підкреслюючи, що за кожним героєм стоять не лише битви, а й внутрішні переживання та моральні вибори.
